The Rio Celeste is far from your ordinary aqueous landscape. The nearly opaque waters of the Celeste river are a surreal shade of bright aquamarine blue. This startling color is created by a chemical reaction cause by the fusion of calcium carbonate and sulfur released from the Tenorio Volcano. This natural wonder is largely undiscovered by tourism and is an experience worth boasting about.
The trip begins with a hour and thirty minute drive to the location. Our tour of the Rio Celeste consists of a scenic 4 mile looped rainforest hike led by a knowledgeable local guide who can point out unique wildlife and highlights of the natural environment. The trail goes through Tenorio Volcano National Park, which is home to wildlife such as tapirs, collared peccaries, birds, several species of monkeys and wild felines. Along the trail we will observe "Los Teñideros”, where the river obtains its sapphire pigmentation. Then the hike will take us to the spectacular Rio Celeste waterfall, a cerulean swimming hole, and hot springs.
